18 Jan - Good powder
Today was good. -10.4C at 1500m, only wind along the ridge crests and a reasonably consistent deep powder upper pack on NE that skied really easily and smoothly. We skied a decent amount on steeper terrain, and put significant pressure on many small test rolls and were not seeing anything shearing in the storm snow, and only limited loose snow/sluffing activity and very minor cracking. However, this snow character can not be carried over to steep southern aspects where there is a sun crust sitting under 60-80cm of storm snow between 1200m and 1500m. We did not travel much on this aspect and have no conclusive feel for how the snow is sitting on that crust, but in general, I'd approach is suspiciously and prefer supported lower angle terrain on south aspects.
That's all we have for today. Want more?
