20100217 weather data for the 24 hours to 5.30am at 800m
Previous Day Field Observations:
Yesterday in Hakuba's backcountry: on northerly gentle terrain from 2200m there was 30cm of powder above the thick and hard Feb 11 melt freeze crust. Almost no wind, dry flakes falling with -13C temps at a rate of about 1 cm per hour. Overnight the wind was very light right up into the alpine with another 7cm of dry snow at 800m, expect double at 2000m. Yesterday was great, and there is more very good powder skiing in the backcountry today.
Some soft windslab about 20cm thick observed on a NE aspect at about 2100m with easy hand shears. The recent storm snow has so far been well bonded with the Feb 11 rain crust.
