20100219 weather data for the 24 hours to 5.30am at 800m
Previous Day Field Observations:
Yesterday in Hakuba's backcountry: the abundant low density and dry powder found up behind Tsugaike from 2200m has gone, replaced with denser wind effect. Below 1800m the snow was at times moist, even on north aspects due to kousa (dust from the Gobi Desert). This storm has not developed as forecast with less loading than expected.
We are finding faceting about 5cm thick between the hard Feb 11 rain crust and the thin soft Feb 14 crust. This has the potential to produce instability as time passes and loading increases – though the forecast is not for much.
