20100304 weather data for the 24 hours to 5.30am at 800m
Previous Day Field Observations:
Very bad conditions in Hakuba's backcountry right now. Not even any good corn skiing unless you are at the right altitude and aspect at the right time. Bewary of the deeper isothermal snowpack around 1900m on south aspects which is still soft and lacking structure having so far failed to refreeze overnight, despite the thick frozen slush crust on top. A warm day will soften the crust and rapidly weaken the already weak deeper pack. We need the (forecast) cold weather to freeze deeply into the snows depth and turn this into a proper spring corn pack. Higher altitude is reportedly frozen solid, but not softening during the day at all.
