Today we set out from Hakuba Goryu to ride the steep fluted face from the col adjacent to Tengu Dake (1940m). It was the second time we had it as an objective and the second time we turned back. Today's we had clear conditions on approach and instant snow and clouds and no visibility the moment we arrived at the entry. I also rappelled down the face, about 48-50 degrees on entry, to inspect the snowpack. It was terrible and unlike the Tsugaike area had a faceted pack with 4mm goblet shaped depth hoar below a nasty crust down about 40-50cm. I climbed back up and we gave away the idea of riding it. Another day, perhaps in spring, but unfortunately not in winter conditions this season.
