Tenki Diary 14 Dec 07

It's 8am on Thursday 13th and the weather data sheet for the last 24 hours has improved a little. Consistent rain turned to snow during the night: 16cm new snow. Minimum temp was only 0C, so its wet. Barometric pressure is at 902mbar after having risen from an overnight low. Light winds from the west, a somewhat meaningless indicator of wind conditions where it counts: up the top.

Yesterday I went to 1600m at Goryu-Hakua47 via Gondola round trip. The rain turned to snow just before 1600m. Its safe to say that all aspects were soaked below 1500m yesterday. The back country snowpack below that altitude was mostly unridable anyway, so it is of little consequence from an avalanche perspective as far as today is concerned.

If it clears a bit I might quickly shoot up higher to have a poke around in the snow, see what’s going on.

Comments

If you get clear skies tonight, you might be able to see the Geminid meteor showers which are peaking tonight.

The last time the Leonids were peaking, I got up for a piss about 3 am and the sky was just full of streamers. It was bizarre. But standing on cold Lino in barefeet at minus 5 in pajamas wasn't something I could bear for long, so I soon went back to bed.

Tonight I'm thinking of kipping on the balcony to see the show, if'n the skies are clear enough to make it worthwhile.

I would have enjoyed that, but we have a bit of a storm settling in here.  There will be no stars tonight.

And I never get up for the toilet, no matter how much I need to.
