Shinnen akemashite omedetou gozaimasu.
New Years Day 2008, the storm continues however the rate of snowfall has eased a little. Over the 24 hours to 7am today another 90cm of new snow has fallen. Strong winds were observed yesterday at 1600m from the SSE.
So far this storm has delivered 205cm of snow in 2 days, which has already settled and compacted to 165cm on the ground - all on top of a very dense snow pack that received a day of rain immediately before the storm (below 1700m). The forecast is for another 2 days of moderate to light snowfall, temperatures warming slightly.
Total snow depth at 860m asl is 192cm. Cumulative snowfall since Nov 21 is a massive 4.5 meters.
