7am Sunday 23 Dec: weather station data for the last 24 hours. Very light snow fall, still overcast but clearing, milder temps. Lower altitude snow is wet on the surface and heavy below.  Today will not help that situation.

A US VC bought Hakuba 47 Ski resort, released on Dec 22, 2007.
Warburg Pincus Japan got the 100% stock holder of Hakuba Forty
Seven Co. on Nov 20. The resort was establised by Chukyo TV Co.
on 1989 Dec, Nagano Winter Olympic Games, and then became an
independent comapany on April 2002.
The capital incresed to 235 million yen from 20 million yen.
The company has had the genenal manager, 5 directors, 11
employees and 6 contractors with newly coming 2 directors.
Sadamitsu Araki, the genreal manager told they would invest
the total of several 1,000 million yen for condos, gondora
facility and so on.

It'll be interesting to see how far these kinds of investments pay off with the US economy facing potential hard times and energy not being so readily available as it has been. Some rather more flexible and less concrete forms of investment would seem to be wise at this juncture...

I see (saw) it all over the world... big business bets being placed.  It would appear that the wheel keeps on turning no matter what.  Another depression will change that. I can see one in the making.

From a ski perspective, I hope they open up most of the trees and 'off-piste' and introduce a much less restricted culture of .  Other resorts will be forced to follow the lead, Hakuba as an alpinist destination will benefit.  All part of the longer term possibility that the valley will become a real backcountry destination.
