Tenki Diary 31 Dec 07
A late start today as it took over an hour to access and clear our weather study plot. In the 24 hours to 7am on the last day of 2007 95cm of new snow has fallen, taking the total snowfall for the last 6 weeks to 360cm. The storm is still going in full force, with about 5cm of snow accumulating every hour. Our car is buried. Perhaps another 50cm will fall at our house before the storm eases. Luckily we have some eater fuel, a big bottle of sake and three bottles of beer for New Years Eve celebration in our hut. Plus some good soba, lots of fresh vegetables and other food.
Yesterday we set out at the start of the storm when only 10cm had accumulated. Our route was in the Saraura area, no lift access at all, sol Lloyd could come along. The objective was to enjoy some new fresh snow before it become too deep for functional or safe backcountry travel. By the late afternoon 50cm had accumulated and travel was a strenuous task. It was a physically demanding day, the dog's fur became a frozen armour of tennis ball sized lumps. and Mio was getting worn out towards the end - quite understandable as in total we travelled (skinned) an 8km round trip and battled some deep snow along the way made easier by some fortunately accurate navigating. We rode in an area with excellent trees and small drops and rolls. It better conditions it would be great, but it takes some effort to reach. Every one else was out riding the lifts for easy powder. Its an appealing option, but life isn't lift served and yesterday was a challenging and rewarding day for us. This afternoon we will have a rest and ride in the resort
